We Simulated 1.3 Million Casino Bonus Claims — Only 16% Ever Clear a 40x Wagering Requirement

An original Monte Carlo study of what actually happens when you claim a casino welcome bonus. Across 1.3 million simulated claims: 16.16% clear a 40x requirement on slots, the average player ends 30.8% down on their deposit, and a $20 no-deposit bonus pays out $7.99. Full model and seed published.

Every casino welcome offer is advertised the same way: deposit $100, get $100, play with $200. The wagering requirement is in the terms, usually as a number like “40x”. What almost nobody publishes is what that number does to your money.

So we simulated it. 1.3 million bonus claims, with the model, the seed and the stopping rules published below.

The headline number

Only 16.16% of players clear a 40x wagering requirement on slots. The other 83.84% run out of money before they get there.

At 40x the requirement is $8,000 of wagering. The average claimant managed $3,298 before their balance hit zero — not even half way.

The finding that explains the terms

Run the identical bonus on a low-edge game and the picture inverts completely:

The arithmetic is not mysterious. Clearing 40x on a $200 balance means wagering $8,000. At a 4% house edge that is an expected $320 of losses against a $100 bonus. At a 1% edge it is $80 against the same $100 bonus — and the bonus wins.

This is precisely why bonus terms exclude blackjack and baccarat, or weight them at 10–20% so you would need five to ten times as many bets. It is disclosed, it is legal, and it is the single term that decides whether the offer is good or bad for you. The simulation assumes a flat weighting. Real terms are not flat: we read five operators’ published bonus terms and found one that scales rollover progress by the house edge of the game you play.

No-deposit bonuses

We ran the same treatment on a $20 no-deposit bonus with 40x wagering and a $100 win cap, at $0.50 flat bets — 100,000 claims:

  • 10.51% cleared the $800 of required wagering.
  • The average payout across every claim was $7.99.

A bonus advertised at $20 is worth about $8. That is still worth taking — no player money is at risk — but it is 40% of the headline, and it explains why operators can afford to hand them out. Our ranked list is in best no-deposit crypto casino bonuses.

What this does not say

Being straight about the limits:

  • This is a model of a slot, not a specific slot. The multiplier table is published below and its RTP is verified to 96.00% exactly in code. Real slots vary enormously in volatility, and volatility — not just RTP — drives the clear rate.
  • We simulate flat bets with no max-bet rule. Most bonus terms cap the bet size while a bonus is active; breaking that cap usually voids the bonus entirely, which our model does not penalise.
  • Game weighting is modelled as game choice, not as a percentage multiplier. A casino that counts slots at 100% and blackjack at 10% produces the losing column, not the winning one.
  • These are averages over large samples. Any individual claim can end anywhere; 16% of them ended well.

Methodology (reproduce it yourself)

  • Environment: Python 3, standard library only (random).
  • Seed: random.seed(20260802) — fixed, so every figure above is exactly reproducible.
  • Bonus model: deposit D = $100, bonus B = $100 (100% match), requirement W = multiplier × (D + B), i.e. the common deposit-plus-bonus basis. Starting balance $200.
  • Stopping rules: play flat $1 bets until cumulative wagered ≥ W (cleared — withdraw the whole balance) or balance < bet (busted — withdraw nothing).
  • Slot model, RTP verified to 96.00% in code: returns of ×0.5 (p=0.265846), ×1 (p=0.132923), ×2 (p=0.081231), ×5 (p=0.032492), ×20 (p=0.009600), ×100 (p=0.001772), and ×0 for the remaining p=0.476135. The paying buckets are scaled in code so the RTP lands exactly on target, and the result is asserted.
  • Even-money model: win probability (1 − edge)/2 at a stated 1% house edge.
  • Sample sizes: 200,000 claims per deposit-match scenario (6 scenarios) plus 100,000 no-deposit claims = 1.3 million.
  • No cherry-picking: single runs at the stated seed, reported in full.

The honest takeaway

A bonus is not free money. It is a discount whose size depends on a term most people skim — and on our numbers, at 40x on slots, the discount is negative: you finish 30.8% down on the money you put in.

That does not make every offer bad. It makes the terms the product. Read the multiplier, read which games count and at what weight, read the max bet, and check the win cap. Then compare it against the same money played without a bonus, where you keep the right to walk away at any point — an option the wagering requirement takes from you.

Do lower wagering requirements make bonuses profitable?
