Betsson

Betsson is one of the oldest names in online gambling — the Stockholm-listed parent traces its roots to 1963 — and it holds an unusually broad regulatory footprint: the Malta Gaming Authority, the UK Gambling Commission, Sweden’s Spelinspektionen and, since 2025, a Brazilian federal SPA licence. That multi-jurisdiction backing is why it rates near the top of the fiat operators we cover.

Licensing and trust

Most operators hold one licence and lean on it. Betsson holds several, and each one is a separate regulator with its own audits, its own complaint channel and its own power to fine.

The one that matters most for a British reader is the UK Gambling Commission. Unlike Curaçao — which states plainly that it does not mediate, arbitrate or order compensation — the UKGC regime requires operators to sign up to an approved alternative dispute resolution provider, to participate in GAMSTOP self-exclusion, and to hold customer funds under a published protection rating. The Brazilian SPA licence (MF 371, granted under the 2025 Portaria) is the more unusual credential. Brazil legalised online casino under Law 14.790/2023 and authorised operators trade on .bet.br domains. Very few internationally established operators completed that process. It means a Brazilian player using the authorised Betsson product is inside the licensed market rather than outside it, which is a materially different legal position from the offshore crypto rooms.

The corporate history supports the licences. Betsson AB is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm, publishes audited accounts, and has operated continuously for over six decades. That is a longer verifiable payout record than any crypto casino in existence.

What the UK licence actually enforces

Great Britain’s licence conditions are unusually specific about what an operator may offer, and two of them change the arithmetic a reader should care about. Social responsibility code 5.1.1 caps bonus wagering requirements at a maximum of 10 times the bonus, and forbids an incentive from spanning more than one gambling product type. Read those against the 40x rollovers that are standard on offshore crypto sites and the difference is not marketing, it is regulation: our own simulation of 1.3 million bonus claims found only 16.16% of players clear a 40x requirement at all. Payments and payouts

Withdrawals in EUR or SEK clear the same day for verified accounts, with cards and bank transfer slower. Deposits start around 10 in the local currency.

There is no crypto, and there will not be: none of Betsson’s regulators permit it. Verification is mandatory and happens up front rather than at cashout, which is friction on day one and the absence of the withheld-withdrawal problem that dominates complaints about lighter-touch operators.

Where it fits

Against a crypto casino, Betsson trades anonymity and instant payouts for recourse, dispute resolution and a capped wagering requirement. Against other regulated operators, its distinguishing feature is the breadth of the licence set — few competitors can serve the UK, Sweden and Brazil from inside each licensed market.

The trade-off is access. Betsson is geo-blocked in a long list of countries where it holds no licence, and holding four licences is precisely why: a regulated operator cannot serve a market it is not authorised in. Online casino play is illegal for residents of Japan, and this site does not target Japanese residents.

Bottom line

A 63-year-old listed company operating inside four regulatory regimes is about as conservative a choice as this sector offers. The cost is no crypto, mandatory verification and slower payouts than an offshore room. The benefit is that if something goes wrong, there is a regulator whose job is to hear you.
