How to Play Baccarat — A Beginner's Step-by-Step Guide

Baccarat looks intimidating in a movie tuxedo, but it is genuinely one of the easiest casino games to play — because after you place your bet, you make no decisions at all. Here is the whole game in a few minutes.
Step 1: Understand what you are betting on
You are not dealt a hand. Instead, two hands are dealt — the Player hand and the Banker hand — and you bet on which one will win, or on a Tie. That is the entire choice you make. “Player” and “Banker” are just the names of the two hands; neither belongs to you.
Step 2: Learn card values (30 seconds)
- Cards 2 to 9 — face value
- 10, J, Q, K — worth 0
- Ace — worth 1
Only the last digit of the total counts. So a 7 and an 8 add to 15, which becomes 5. The best possible total is 9, called a natural.
Step 3: Place your bet — pick Banker

Step 4: Let the cards resolve
Both hands get two cards. If either totals 8 or 9 (a natural), the hand ends immediately. Otherwise the third-card rule may add one card to each hand — the Player draws on 0–5, and the Banker’s action depends on its total and the Player’s third card. This is all automatic. Step 5: Get paid
Whichever hand is closest to 9 wins. Banker wins pay 1:1 minus the 5% commission; Player wins pay 1:1; a tie pushes Player/Banker bets. Then the next hand begins.
